Going Through
Hell Getting to Rock Heaven
by
Anne Hunter
In
August, me and friends ventured out to
do some serious rockhunting. My nephew
drove because he knew the road well where
we wanted to go. But where we wanted
to go had a horrid road that I managed
to avoid on my rockhunting trips. That
is until this day. I convinced myself
that it could not be that bad. Afterall,
how many times have others gone through
it and are still here today to talk about
it. I knew one day sooner or later I
would also be talking about my adventure
through that route. >>more

MIss-Adventures
of two fairburn agate hunters
by
Jim Hardesty January
24, 2005 started out as a great day for
Fairburn agate hunting. Jamie Brezina
met me at my house about 7:00 AM. He
decided to drive his 1997 Jeep Wrangler
on this hunt because the rancher where
we were going knew this vehicle.
The
sky was clear and the forecast was for
calm winds and near 60 degree temperature,
perfect, especially for January in South
Dakota. We arrived at the ranch house
at 8:00 and met with the owners’ brother. >>more

F4: Frustrations of Finding Your
First Fairburn
by
Evonne Evans If
Fairburns were food...I'd starve to death.
If finding Fairburns earned you a degree...I'd still be in preschool.
If finding Fairburns were your only source of energy..I'd be sleeping.
If Fairburns were natural teeth...I'd need dentures.
If Fairburns were a source of currency...I'd be broke.
Are you catching my drift? >>more

Fairburn Addiction In
2001, my good friend invited me to Fairburn
to do some rock hunting. I jumped at
the opportunity, as I have always liked
rocks.
We parked at the gate and
walked the narrow road that led into
the rock beds. I seen there was serious
rock hunting to do when we came onto
the massive rock beds before us. At that
time I had no idea what I was looking
for and for a long time after that and
several more rock hunting trips I still
did not know what I was looking for. >>more

A July rockhunting
weekend with friends
This is what rockhunting
is all about. Spending a day with your
fairburn friends. This particular day was
at least 100 degrees and even hotter in
the rockbeds. In spite of the heat, we
did manage to have some luck.

5th Generation
Rock Collector Taylor,
now six years old is the daughter of one
of our rockhounds, Lance, whose mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother were
all collectors and probably more generations.
These are some of Taylor's finds. Taylor
found the fairburn on left at age three
and two years later at age five found the
fairburn on right within 200 yards of the
first find.

Careful with
the prairie agates John Masterson did just as many other
rock collectors do when they have picked
up a few prairie agates. They take them
home, throw them a pile in the yard and
hope one day they will turn into real fairburns.
Luckily for John, one did just that! For
two years, John walked past his pile of
prairie agates until just recently when
he decided to sell some on ebay. As he
sorted and cleaned the prairie agates,
one turned out to be a 3 ½ lb. solid
fairburn!
Congratulations John! and thanks for sharing
your story. See
some of John's fairburn collection.

Big find for
a little rockhound Nice
find for this little rockhound from Kyle.
The black and white agate was found in
late September at Red Shirt during a rockhunting
trip with her parents and friends. Though
the photos do not show the full pattern
of this beauty, this large agate is very
very nice. Congratulations Brianna.
